In the area of workforce development, Indian Country is at a critical crossroads. Many Native Nations and communities—led by tribal governments, Native non-profit service organizations, and tribal colleges and universities – have made significant strides over the past several decades to decolonize and redesign their workforce development systems. This has meant cultivating with growing success Native people’s abilities to lead productive, satisfying lives and contribute meaningfully to the cultural, social, and economic life of their Native nations and communities. In this panel, we will hear from leaders who have designed culturally competent programming for their communities while centering Native workers, leaders who are funding initiatives to redesign destructive federal policies hindering Native workforce potential, and narrative change leaders and movement builders who understand what it takes to shift philanthropic support to Indian Country.
